12th annual FREE family festival and car show
Need a completely free fun family event to attend? Come out to CrossPointe Community Church on Saturday, August 26, for the 12th Annual Family Fest and Car Show. Hours are 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. If you have never been to this event, the key thing to know is that everything is free. All the food is free-hot food, cold food, snacks, ice cream, nachos, cotton candy, popcorn and drinks. The church is planning food and fun for 7,500 people this year! There will be bouncies for kids. Free. Rides for all ages. Free. Crafts. Free. Classic Car Show with prizes, dash plaques and trophies. Free. Cars (classics, muscle and antiques) can start arriving at 7:00 a.m. There is plenty of parking across the street from the church for those who want to attend the event. This event is well-attended each year and is put on for the entire community. Stop by and check it out!

Diamond of the community
The Wayne Senior Services department is taking applications for the 2017 Diamond of the Community. Nominees must be 70 years old or above and actively volunteering in the community. Applications are available at City Hall and HYPE and need to be returned by August 17.

Social event for young professionals
Wayne Main Street has put together a social event for young professionals to attend and get to know one another on August 10 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at The Avenue. Call Wayne Main Street for more information (734) 629-6822,

Household hazardous waste collection
There are two more household hazardous waste collection events being held this year in Wayne County. The next one will be August 12 at the Westland Shopping Center. The final one will be held October 7 at Wayne County Community College-Downriver Campus in Taylor. This is your opportunity to get rid of your unwanted household chemicals, cleaning products, automotive fluids, paints and stains, and old electronics to be properly disposed of for free. They will also be collecting lawn products, fluorescent light bulbs and pharmaceutical waste. For a complete list of acceptable items, please visit www.WayneCounty.com.

Remember when…
The Wayne Sometimes Travelers will take a trip to Wyandotte during their Remember When…bus trip on Wednesday, August 16. They will start with a lunch at Smokies Restaurant and Bar where you will have a choice between three restaurant favorites along with two side dishes, dessert and a beverage. After lunch, take a two-hour narrated cruise on the Diamond Jack River Cruise where cruisers will see the new, exclusive community of waterfront mansions, accessible only by ferry, that now dot Bob-Lo Island. Other sites of interest that you’ll cruise by include Calvert Canada Distillery, Fort Malden, Kings Navy Yard Park, Stony Island, Livingstone Channel and the Grosse Ile Lighthouse. Family fun day at HYPE
HYPE will be hosting a Family Fun Day along with a vendor show on August 20 from Noon-6:00 p.m.

Suicide awareness forum
Youth Services will be hosting a Suicide Awareness Forum on September 6 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Wayne Police Department.

Detroit Tigers
Travel with the Wayne Sometimes Travelers to Comerica Park on Wednesday, August 23, to see the Detroit Tigers play the New York Yankees. The trip will depart from Canton Summit at 4:00 p.m. and will return at 11:00 p.m. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:10 p.m. Included in the trip price is a bountiful buffet with gourmet cuisine, a VIP entrance, full service bar, no parking fees and a spectacular view. August concerts in the park
Mark your calendar now so you don’t miss out on any of the August concerts in Goudy Park. Come out on Wednesday evenings with your friends and family (or alone) and enjoy great music. August 9: Kung Fu Diesel (American rock and roll band). August 16: The Magic Bus Tour (a musical trip back to the Woodstock era), August 23: Your Generation in Concert (world’s greatest tribute band), and August 30: Dirty Deeds (extreme AC/DC). Bring dinner with you and enjoy a picnic at the park.
These free concerts are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. There is bench seating in front of the amphitheater, but you may wish to bring a folding chair for comfort.

Paint rocks at HYPE
Join Wayne Rocks as community members gather at HYPE on Mondays from 10:00 a.m.-Noon to paint rocks that can be hidden in Wayne as part of the Wayne Rocks movement. All supplies are provided. Community clean-ups!
Are you or your organization interested in doing an organized clean-up? If so, the City of Wayne is delighted to receive the help. They only ask that you contact the Department of Public Works Assistant Director Ed Queen at 734-721-8600 so that he can coordinate with you on the pick-up of any litter or debris that was collected and assure it is discarded in a timely fashion. Thank you for stepping up to help keep our city clean. Together, we are better!

Congratulations to Distinguished Women
Local girls Ashley Socia, Sariah Bolden and Danielle Deel each received a scholarship for their “Be Your Best Self” essay at the recent Michigan Distinguished Young Women program held in July in Saline. During their week of preparation, they had a wonderful experience and were able to partake in many community service activities as well as various learning opportunities and fun time with fellow contestants from across the state. Some of these included: serving food at the Ronald McDonald House in Detroit, visiting the residents at Breckon Village Senior Home, MIS Speedway tour, Jiffy Bakery Tour and Meet and Greet with the CEO/Founder Howdy Holmes, Henry Ford Museum visit, Cranbrook tour, speakers at the Brooklyn Kiwanis Club, and Life Skills Workshop at Adiant (formerly Johnson Controls Corporation).

Friends: people helping people
On Saturday, September 9 (raindate: September 16), the FRIENDS program will once again come together to help a resident spruce up their home. FRIENDS was started in 1998 to help a Wayne resident whose home needed some tender loving care. Homes are usually chosen based on the homeowners’ inability to handle the work themselves due to either financial or health reasons. The Friends committee coordinates with willing volunteers to complete the task. This program is completely funded through donations and volunteers. On the day of the event, volunteers will donate approximately six hours of time to work on projects such as painting and/or planting at a preselected Wayne home. A continental breakfast will be held at 8:30 a.m. at the HYPE Recreation Center. Lunch will be served on site. Youth group volunteers are welcome as long as there is one adult for every five youth volunteers. First annual chili cook-off
The first annual chili cook-off will be held at HYPE Recreation Center on October 21 from 4-7:00 p.m. Do you make a great batch of chili and/or cornbread? If so, plan to enter this contest. It is $10 to enter in either the Chili Only or the Chili and Cornbread category. It is $5 to enter in the Cornbread Only category. Awards planned to be given are for best overall, people’s choice, most creative ingredients, best veggie/ vegan, best wild game chili and best fire house chili. Individual tickets will be $3 or $12 per family. Each participating chili cooker will have sample bowls at their station that attendees will be able to eat. Cemetery walk
The Wayne Historical Society will be holding their 4th annual Cemetery Walk on Sunday, October 1, at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. This will complete the cycle of all cemeteries within Wayne’s city limits. Past walks were held at the Old Wayne Cemetery, Glenwood Cemetery and West Lawn Cemetery.

Farmer’s Market
Brought to you by Beaumont Wayne, you can visit Beaumont Hospital Wayne every Thursday from now until September 28 from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. for a weekly Farmer’s Market. The Eastern Market Farm Stand will provide a seasonal bounty of fresh, healthy and affordable fruits and vegetables as well as a selection of specialty items from local food merchants. The market will be located at the canopy area of the Surgery Center entrance drive.
