Memorial Day Parade
The annual Wayne Westland Memorial Day Parade will be Sunday, May 27, at 1:00 p.m. The parade will start out of the Ford Civic League parking lot on Wayne Rd in Westland and wind its way to the Veteran’s Memorial Garden of Westland located behind the William P. Faust Public Library, 6123 Central City Parkway, Westland.

Art show
Come to the Wayne Historical Museum during open hours anytime between April 4 and May 10 to view the First Annual High School Art Show featuring works of art from current students at Wayne Memorial High School and John Glenn High School. The museum is open 10:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on Thursdays. Admission is free. Art will include ceramics, painting, drawing, digital media and sculpture. While you are at the museum, have a look around at the newly refurbished displays of history in Wayne.

Play auditions coming up!
Inspire Theater of Westland is looking for actors, singers and non-singers ages 13-70 for its upcoming production of “Yankee Doodle Dandy: Song and Dance Man.” The angelic spirit of Broadway’s great song-and-dance man, George M. Cohan, reappears on earth to help stage a centennial pageant for the Rocky Mountain town of Snookersville. Grumpy old Emily Snooker, great granddaughter of the founder, tries to force the town to stage a hilariously dull and phony historical play but is outmaneuvered by Cohan and friends. Lots of laughs and a flag waving love story, too! Add five original rock, ragtime and western ballads to many Cohan favorites like “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “Give My Regards to Broadway” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and you have a show that really bounces.
Auditions will be held on April 10 and 12. Plan on arriving before 6:30p.m. and staying until 9:00 p.m. Be prepared to sing “Give my regards to Broadway.” Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Wayne bicycle club season opener
The Wayne Bicycle Club will be rolling out on their season opener Thursday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome to ride. The Club meets at the State Wayne Phoenix Theater. The Club is planning some great rides for 2018 including Belle Isle, I-275 trails, Metro trails, Zukey Lake bike trail, downtown Detroit, downtown Ann Arbor, Depot Town in Ypsilanti and perhaps a few overnight trips to Lake Michigan.

Diabetic prevention program classes
Free classes start Tuesday, April 17, for Beaumont’s Diabetes Prevention Program led by trained lifestyle coaches who will give you the skills you need to make lasting, healthy lifestyle changes. Classes are at 6:00 p.m. and last an hour. Small changes can make a big difference in your health. This program will show you how to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. There will be an informational session on Tuesday, April 3, at 6:00 p.m. if you would like more information. Downtown Wayne clean up day April 21
Volunteers are wanted for the annual Downtown Wayne Clean Up Day on Saturday, April 21, from 9:00 a.m. – Noon. Help Wayne Main Street and other community organizations as they come together to make downtown Wayne more beautiful. Preregister to volunteer and you will receive a free t-shirt! You can preregister at downtownwayne.org or call Wayne Main Street at (734) 629-6822. Volunteers will gather at 29th District Court parking lot, 34808 Sims St. Parking will be available there. You can also register the day of the event. Participating organizations include Friends of the Rouge, The Interact Club, Healthy Wayne, Phoenix Theaters, Rouge-a-Palooza, Wayne Chamber of Commerce, Wayne DPW, Wayne Rotary and Wayne Main Street.

Cooking matters-diabetes
This 6-week workshop is a commitment of fun, interactive sessions presented by a trained culinary and nutrition instructor. Hands-on presentations demonstrate the link between nutrition and health, the affordability of healthy eating, healthy meal planning and cooking tips. Free groceries and cookbooks are included to practice new skills at home. This workshop provides specialized recipes and information for adults living with diabetes and their caregivers. The class starts Tuesday, April 4, and goes until May 9; meeting time is 6:00-8:00 p.m. Class is free and open to adults who have not previously enrolled in a Cooking Matters course. Wayne Pride – The Lady Zebras beat Hartland 54-44 to earn a trip to the state semi-finals in Grand Rapids. The girls lost in the semi-finals to East Lansing 52-60. Great season girls!

The D.U.R. streetcar system
The Wayne Historical Society invites you to come learn about the Detroit interurban streetcar system that ran from Detroit to Wayne and beyond. The presentation will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, at the Wayne Historical Museum, 1 Towne Square.

Several trips are being planned by Wayne Senior Services. You can join in and alleviate the hassle of planning and driving. You can pick up trip flyers at City Hall or the Senior Services office located inside HYPE Recreation Center, 4635 Howe Rd, or you can call Nancy at (734) 721-7460.

Zebra Safari coming soon
Get your tickets to the annual Zebra Safari sponsored by the Zebra Parent Advisory Council at Wayne Memorial High School. Proceeds from this event benefit the Class of 2018 for their Farewell Event and other student activities. Entertainment will be provided by WMHS students. Food will be provided by the William D. Ford Career Tech Center Culinary Arts staff and students. The event will be Friday, April 13, at the Dyer Senior Center, 36745 Marquette, Westland. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Dinner will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 and are available until March 23. You can drop by Wayne Memorial High School 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday to get your tickets or call (734) 419-2200 to make other arrangements. Sponsorship levels are also available. Spring rummage sale
First United Methodist Church of Wayne, 3 Towne Square, will be holding its annual Spring Rummage Sale on Thursday, May 10, and Friday, May 11, from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 12, from 9:00 a.m.-Noon is Bargain Bag Day. Two bag sizes will be available for $3 or $6 where you can fill your bag as you wish. The church is handicap-accessible.

Fairy garden workshop

Ships, shipping, shipwrecks and genealogy
A guest speaker from the National Museum of the Great Lakes will be at the Wayne Historical Museum, 1 Towne Square, on Thursday, April 12, to talk about ships and how to track your ancestors. The talk will begin at 7:00 p.m. and is brought to you by the Wayne Historical Society.

Inaugural school district speech
Wayne-Westland Community School District will be holding its Inaugural State of the District Address at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, in the John Glenn High School auditorium, 36105 Marquette, Westland. Staff, students, parents, community members and elected officials are all invited to hear about the latest news and plans for the district. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. There will be a Gallery Walk of student projects available at that time.
Superintendent Shelley Holt, Ed.D. will report on the District’s accomplishments and share plans for the coming year.

Swim night for women
HYPE Recreation Center is hosting Women’s Only Swim Nights on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month. Cost is $6 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Girls and women must be age 13 or older.
No children under 13 and no boys allowed. HYPE is located at 4635 Howe Rd.
