Lots of Family-friendly Halloween activities in Wayne

By Sarah Shurge – If you’re looking for family-friendly activities to enjoy for the Halloween season, the city of Wayne has got you covered with events all throughout the month of October.

On Sunday, October 13th from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., Flowers in the Mitten will host Bluey and Bingo Halloween.
Children can come dressed up in Halloween costumes and get free photos with Bluey and Bingo. Adults can shop for Halloween and fall decorations from talented vendors inside the shop while they’re there.
Flowers in the Mitten is located at 34852 Michigan Ave.
“Come dressed up and show Bluey and Bingo your Halloween costume and get your picture taken with them,” said Rachel Botu, Flowers in the Mitten owner.

On Wednesday, October 16th from 5 – 7 p.m., Corewell Health Wayne Hospital will host Trunk or Treat.
The event will have Halloween music playing, fun decorations, silly costumes, and sweet treats.
Corewell Health Wayne Hospital is located at 33155 Annapolis St.
“Enjoy some hot chocolate, cider, and doughnuts while our staff and friends pass out candy. Costumes are encouraged and be prepared for a great time,” said Keyla LaVeque, Corewell Health Administrative Assistant.

On Saturday, October 19th from 12 – 4 p.m., Goody’s Pet Supply will host Halloween Pet Photos.
The photos ($10 a photo) are taken by Dee Maggio Photography, benefitting Providing for Paws. There will be a Fall backdrop for the photos, so you can come in Halloween costume or Fall attire.
Goody’s Pet Supply is located at 35340 E Michigan Ave.
“We are all looking forward to seeing you or your pets. Thank you for showing your support to Providing for Paws,” said Tom Swim, Goody’s Pet Supply Manager.

On Saturday, October 19th from 12 – 6 p.m., Moonlit Mystic will host its third annual Witches be Witchin’.
The event will have artisan vendors, oddities and curiosities, tarot readings, live music, food trucks, hourly giveaway, and entertainers throughout the day including Fire Dancer, Saffire Supernova, and the Detroit Stilt Walker. There will be a costume contest with prizes for Best Witch Hat, Overall Costume, and Best Children’s Costume.
Moonlit Mystic is located at 3019 S Wayne Rd. The event will be held in the back parking lots and inside the store. A pop-up bar will be in the event space where Knights of Columbus Notre Dame Council 3021 will be serving beer and spirits.
“We’d love to invite the community out for a wicked-day of fun in the city of Wayne,” said Tiffany Walker, Moonlit Mystic owner.

On Saturday, October 19th from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., the Wayne Public Library is hosting Ghostly Tea Lights.
The event is for all ages. You can make your own light-up ghost pal out of air-dry clay and a battery-powered tea light.
The Wayne Public Library is located at 3737 S Wayne Rd.
“These glowing ghosts look impressive – and adorable – but are super simple to make,” said Jody Wolak, Wayne Public Library director.
On Saturday, October 19th at 2p.m., Flowers in the Mitten will also host a Boo Floral Class.
You can celebrate the Halloween season with a floral tin pumpkin. The class ($40 per person) will teach step-by-step how to make the adorable arrangement while enjoying some Halloween treats.
Flowers in the Mitten is located at 34852 Michigan Ave.
“It’s something fun and different to do where you’re getting to learn basic floral skills. It’s a fun afternoon out to explore your creativity,” said Botu.

On Saturday, October 26th from 12 – 3 p.m., First Congregational Church of Wayne will host Trunk of Treat.
The event will have candy, dessert, games, costume contest, and scavenger hunt.
First Congregational Church of Wayne is located at 2 Towne Square. The event will be held in the church parking lot. For more information, call (734)729-7550.
“We’re open to everybody and inviting all families. Come for an afternoon of enjoyment,” said Bob Cooper, lead minister at First Congregational Church of Wayne.

On Saturday, October 26th, Merge Community Church will host Trunk or Treat. Sensory friendly hours are from 2 – 3 p.m., general public from 3 – 5 p.m.
The event will have cider, donuts, and plenty of candy to go around.
Merge Community Church is located at 3789 Venoy Rd. “Our sensory friendly hour is perfect for any kiddos that need it to be a little less crowded and chaotic,” said Velita Reith, Merge Community Church Outreach Leader.

On Saturday, October 26th from 2:30 – 4 p.m., Wayne Westland Federal Credit Union will host Trunk or Treat.
The event will have a balloon maker on site, police cars and fire trucks, and kids’ music for a small dance party.
Wayne Westland Federal Credit Union (WWFCU) is located at 500 S Wayne Rd.
“We are looking forward to another successful Trunk or Treat event this year. All are welcome and invited to attend. Bring your ghouls, ghosts, goblins, and kids too,” said Joleen Bowman, WWFCU CEO.

On Saturday, October 26th from 4 – 6:30 p.m., Books on the Ave and Karma Coffee and Kitchen will host their fourth annual Trunk or Treat Spooktacular.
The event will have an artist market, hot chocolate, and food items for sale. There will be a trunk contest.

Karma Coffee and Kitchen is located at 35634 Michigan Ave. The event will be held behind Karma Coffee.
“We wanted to do something fun for the community to help make Halloween more fun and safe,” said Jennifer Romero, Karma Coffee & Kitchen owner.

On Saturday, October 26th from 4 – 8 p.m., Classics and Beyond Auto Gallery will host their third annual Trunk or Treat.
The event will have a small car show, trunk decorations, a trick-or-treating line through the showroom, pizza and hot dogs, and soft drinks and water.

“It will be a great family event that kids can enjoy,” said Vince Salinitro, Classics and Beyond Auto Gallery Sales Manager.

On Monday, October 28th, HYPE Athletics will host HYPE-Up for Halloween Trunk or Treat. Those with disabilities can attend from 6 – 6:30 p.m., general public from 6:30 – 8 p.m.
The event will have costumes and candy. Cider and donuts will be served (first come first serve, while supplies last)

“We’re looking forward to seeing the community come out and for all the trick-or-treaters to enjoy our safe Halloween walk,” said Rabih Darweich, HYPE General Manager.
On Wednesday, October 30th from 6:30 – 7:15 p.m., the Wayne Public Library is hosting Halloween Storytime.
Children ages 3-5 (with their caregivers) can come to story time in costume and they will trick-or-treat around the library.
The Wayne Public Library is located at 3737 S Wayne Rd.
“Kids are encouraged to come in costume. We’ll listen to some spooky – but not too scary – stories and then trick-or-treat around the library,” said Wolak.
On Thursday, October 31st from 6:30 – 8 p.m., Hill Crest Bible Church will host Trunk or Treat.
The event will have candy being passed out inside the church.

Halloween fun.

Hill Crest Bible Church is located at 3 Towne Square St. The entrance at the West side will be open.
“It’s a safe place to come, and it’s indoors so weather doesn’t matter,” said Seth McDonald, lead pastor at Hill Crest Bible Church.

The Wayne Public Library is also hosting several other spooky events this month, such as: Gilded Insects (adult program) on Thursday, October 10th, Owl Pellet Dissection (teen program – grades 6-12) on Monday, October 21st, and Michigan’s Most Dangerous Women (adult program) on Thursday, October 24th.

“As we gear up for Halloween, the library is brewing up some spooktacular programs that are sure to enchant and entertain visitors of all ages. Join us as we celebrate the season of thrills and chills,” said Wolak.

The Wayne Downtown Development Authority (DDA) partnered with Flowers in the Mitten for the second Annual Scarecrow Fest, which happened on Saturday, September 21st.
“It was a beautiful day in Goudy Park, and we are incredibly grateful to Rachel and Paul Botu of Flowers in the Mitten for their hard work in making this event a success and bringing the scarecrows back to Michigan Avenue,” said Lisa Kubany, DDA Director of Events and Marketing. The scarecrows will remain displayed on Michigan Avenue during the entire month of October for the public to enjoy.
“Be sure to take a stroll down WB Michigan Avenue, from Second St. just past Wayne Rd, to enjoy the creativity of the scarecrows lining the street,” said Kubany.
This is just a sampling of all the events happening in town. So whether you want to see some scarecrows, take some photos, get creative with crafts, or go trunk-or-treating, the city of Wayne has an event for everyone to enjoy!
