Garden City Hospital opens Community Health Center
By Sarah Shurge – “This is a major investment in this community’s health, today as we open the brand new Westland Community Health Center,” said Governor Gretchen Whitmer at the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new health center in Westland.
The ceremony was on Wednesday, September 1st.
It was a beautiful sunny day. The crowd was full of uniforms, scrubs, white lab coats, suits, and civilians. Fire engines, ambulances, and news trucks loaded the parking lot.
“It’s a pretty exciting day. We appreciate the investment, we appreciate the jobs,” said Westland Mayor Bill Wild. “This is the Westland Shop and Dine District. We’re right next to City Hall. So, there’s a lot of changes in the future for this area and Garden City Hospital’s going to be a major part of that.”
The $10 million state-of-the-art facility is located on Warren Road in Westland, where David’s Bridal and Malarkey’s Irish Pub formerly were located.
“The City of Westland, a lot of people may not realize, but we’re actually the largest city in Michigan that did not have a hospital in our borders. So we were always looking to bring a medical facility in our town that could help our residents,” said Mayor Wild.
The Westland Community Health Center offers Westland access to a wide range of high-quality medical care and services in one convenient location, close to home.
The new health center houses a free-standing emergency department, an outpatient family medicine clinic, physical therapy clinic, outpatient radiology services, lab services, and multi-specialty physician offices.
The facility is owned and operated by the team at Garden City Hospital.
“Since 1947, Garden City Hospital has been at the center of the community, where we work hard to build trust and improve the health of our community,” said Saju George, chief executive officer, Garden City Hospital. “With the opening of the Westland Community Health Center, we are able to provide expanded access to healthcare for the people of Westland and the neighborhood communities.”
The emergency department will be staffed by emergency medicine trained physicians and experienced staff.
“This team has been nationally recognized for their clinical expertise and patient safety for good reason. They put Michiganers first and they save lives,” said Governor Whitmer.
Special thanks were given at the ceremony to Regional CEO Saju George and his team at Garden City Hospital, Westland Mayor Bill Wild and his team, Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, the Garden City Hospital staff, Prime Healthcare for investing $75 million over the last few years, and the board of trustees.
“This center is a true reflection of one of those efforts where the state, the county, and the city leaders came together, working with us to help meet the needs of this community,” said George.
Mayor Wild stated that a lot of nurses from Westland have been hired to work at the new clinic.
“Garden City believes that the best hospitals are the community hospitals that treat you and treat your neighbor like treating their own family,” said Osama Siblani, Garden City Hospital board chairman and Arab American News publisher.
The center offers a spacious, open floor plan emergency room with 12 private rooms, two state of the art trauma bays, CT, digital x-rays, and a full-service lab.
“Providing quality care for the community of Westland is our promise to you and that’s what we are here celebrating today. We are thrilled to be here to open our Westland Community Health Center and its state-of-the-art emergency room,” said George.
