Homecoming at Wayne Memorial
By Sarah Shurge – Everyone wants to feel included.
This year, both high schools in the Wayne-Westland Community Schools (Wayne Memorial and John Glenn) did not announce a homecoming king and queen. There was still a competition and crowns for the winners, but instead of king and queen there is a different title now.
The high schools decided to do away with the gender-specific titles and announce the winners as gender-neutral homecoming “royalty.” Royalty can be a student of any gender.
The change is an effort to be more inclusive for those who do not conform to the traditional gender identities and to ensure all students have the opportunity to feel included.
Wayne Memorial royalty was announced on Friday, October 15th, during its homecoming game at halftime. WMHS Homecoming Royalty for 2021 is Nathan Sentz and Heidi Ochoa Martinez.
The homecoming dance was on Saturday, October 16th, in the new cafeteria. The theme was Decades. It was a semi-formal event and students got to hang out with friends and dance from 7:00 p.m. through 10:00 p.m.
