Wayne Scout raising funds for playground
By Sarah Shurge – All it takes is one person and an idea to make a difference.
Jayce Elmore is a Life Scout from Troop 735 in Wayne. Elmore has been a scout since he was in 1st grade, and a Life Scout for about one year. He is fundraising for his Eagle Scout Service Project to install benches and fix the playground perimeter at Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center (JBCVC).
JBCVC is the center for the Norwayne community that provides a physical space for various community organizations and programs.
“It’s a low-income area and when I was younger, I used to play there often. So, I wanted to fix it up so future generations could have something better,” said Elmore.
He is looking for financial support or support through material donations of 38 railroad ties, 16 pieces of 10-foot rebar, 14 pressure treated 2 x 4, and four bags of concrete.
He has a goal of raising $3,000 for his project. Right now, he is around $650.
“I really appreciate it [to the people that have donated] but I don’t want to make this about me. It’s about the kids and having a safe and fun place to play,” said Elmore.
On May 21st at 9 a.m., Elmore and a group of volunteers will be installing the benches at JBCVC. Anyone is welcome to stop by and help for a few hours if they are interested and available.
Food donations to feed the volunteers are welcomed. The Elmore family is asking for: cases of water, coffee from a coffee shop, donut holes, mini muffins, fruit tray, pizza, bread sticks, salad, cookies, pop, or individual bags of chips.
