WMHS Boys Bowling team wins State Championship
By Sarah Shurge – Congratulations to the Wayne Memorial High School Boys Bowling team on winning the 2023 MHSAA State Championship on Friday, March 3rd.
The team consists of Jeremiah Hodge, Elliot Hill, Davin Raisanen, Mark-Vincent Wells, Santray Trottier, Kyle Webster, and Donovan Uselman.
“I cannot say enough good things about these young men. They are the success story. They’ve put in the hours and tested their skills. And they sure were tested this weekend,” said Wayne Memorial Bowling Coach Christine Day. “They put every bit of energy that they had, into the day and especially in matchplay, and it paid off.”
In the finals, the team shot 224 and 170 for Bakers, putting them ahead by 59 pins. They then shot 937 for the team game to win 1331 to Woodhaven’s 1244. Wayne won by 87 pins.
“It was the best ending to a fantastic season,” said Coach Day.
Day has been with Wayne bowling for eight years in total. She coached the girls team her first four years, and the last four years she has been coaching both the boys and girls teams.
“These are just the best kids and are so supportive of one another. They value and respect everyone in their lives, including me, as their coach,” said Coach Day.
At Regionals on Saturday, February 25th, Kyle and Donovan finished 4th and 5th in Singles, which qualified them to bowl at Individual State Finals on Saturday, March 4th.
“Making it to States as a team and individual is outstanding. It takes a toll on you physically, mentally, and emotionally to bowl both events at that level, back-to-back,” said Coach Day. “Donnie and Kyle put all their energy into this weekend and they and their teammates should be proud of their accomplishments.”
Kyle shot his first 300 at qualifying, however both bowlers did not make matchplay/win at States.
“We wouldn’t be here without every single one of these players: Jeremiah, Elliot, Davin, Mark-Vincent, Santray, Kyle and Donnie. Each of them showed up and did their part, every single time. They are a team to the core and what a way to end our four years together,” said Coach Day.
Congratulations again to the Boys Bowling team on their victory.
